Ontario Income Tax Filing 2025: File Online, Fast and Easy

Everything Ontario residents need to know about filing their provincial and federal taxes online — credits, deadlines, and how FastnEasyTax makes it simple.

Filing Your Ontario Tax Return in 2025

As an Ontario resident, you file one combined income tax return each year that covers both your federal taxes (paid to the Canada Revenue Agency) and your Ontario provincial taxes. Unlike some countries where state and federal filings are separate, Canada’s system means one return, one submission, and one refund — making the process significantly simpler.

FastnEasyTax is NETFILE-certified by the CRA and Revenu Québec, and fully supports all Ontario provincial tax calculations, credits, and forms. Here’s everything you need to know about filing your Ontario income tax return in 2025.

Ontario Tax Rates for 2025

Ontario uses a graduated (progressive) tax rate system. The more you earn, the higher the rate on income above each bracket threshold:

  • 05% on the first $51,446 of taxable income
  • 15% on income between $51,446 and $102,894
  • 16% on income between $102,894 and $150,000
  • 16% on income between $150,000 and $220,000
  • 16% on income above $220,000

These rates apply on top of federal tax rates, giving most Ontarians a combined marginal tax rate of approximately 20% at the lowest bracket and up to 53% at the highest. FastnEasyTax calculates your exact combined rate automatically.

Ontario Tax Credits You Should Know About

Ontario Basic Personal Amount

Every Ontario resident gets a basic personal amount — income that is exempt from Ontario tax. For 2025, the Ontario basic personal amount is $11,865, providing an Ontario tax credit of approximately $599.

Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB)

The Ontario Trillium Benefit is a combination of three credits delivered in monthly payments (or as a single annual payment):

  • Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC) — for renters and homeowners who pay property tax or rent
  • Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC) — for residents of Northern Ontario
  • Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC) — for low-to-moderate income Ontario residents

The OTB is refundable, meaning you can receive it even if you owe no Ontario tax. To receive the OTB, you must file your tax return. FastnEasyTax includes the ON-BEN form (Application for the Ontario Trillium Benefit) automatically when you indicate you are an Ontario resident.

Ontario Senior Homeowners’ Property Tax Grant

If you are 64 or older, owned and occupied your home, and paid Ontario property tax, you may be eligible for a grant of up to $500 per year. This is claimed on the ON-BEN application.

Ontario Seniors Care at Home Tax Credit

A refundable tax credit of 25% of eligible medical expenses paid at home for seniors aged 70 or older, up to $6,000 in eligible expenses (maximum credit: $1,500). Eligible expenses include medical devices, personal care workers, home modifications, and more.

Ontario Child Care Access and Relief from Expenses (CARE) Tax Credit

For Ontario families who pay for child care, the CARE tax credit can be worth up to 75% of eligible child care expenses for lower-income families, with the credit rate decreasing as family net income increases. This is in addition to the federal Child Care Expense Deduction.

Ontario Tax Deadline 2025

The deadline to file your 2025 Ontario (and federal) income tax return is April 30, 2026. If you or your spouse/common-law partner have self-employment income, your filing deadline extends to June 15, 2026 — however, any taxes owing must still be paid by April 30 to avoid interest charges.

Filing late means you’ll be charged a 5% penalty on any outstanding balance, plus 1% per month for up to 12 months. If you’ve been charged a late-filing penalty in any of the three preceding tax years, the penalty doubles to 10% plus 2% per month. File on time — even if you can’t pay immediately.

Filed online with FastnEasyTax, your Ontario and federal taxes are both submitted in a single NETFILE transmission. Most filers receive their combined federal and Ontario refund within 10 business days.

Common Situations for Ontario Tax Filers

Ontario Residents Who Work from Home

If you worked from home in 2025 (employed, not self-employed), you may be eligible to claim home office expenses. The CRA allows employees to claim a portion of home office costs such as electricity, internet, rent, and home maintenance — using the detailed method (with a signed T2200 from your employer) or the temporary flat rate method if still in effect.

Ontario Renters

If you rent your home in Ontario, you may be eligible for the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (part of the OTB). This requires your landlord’s name and address, and the rent you paid in 2025. FastnEasyTax asks for this information in the Ontario credits section.

Ontario Homeowners

Homeowners who paid Ontario property tax may also claim the OEPTC. You’ll need your property tax paid in 2025. If you received a property tax deferral, contact your municipality for the correct amount to enter.

Frequently Asked Questions — Ontario Tax Filing

Q: Is FastnEasyTax as accurate as TurboTax?

A: Yes. FastnEasyTax offers a 100% accuracy guarantee on all calculations. The software has been NETFILE-certified by the CRA since 2011 and uses the same official tax rates and rules as any other certified platform. Both FastnEasyTax and TurboTax are required to meet the same CRA certification standards for accuracy.

Q: Can FastnEasyTax handle my investments and capital gains?

A: Yes. FastnEasyTax supports T5 slips (interest and dividends), T3 slips (trust and mutual fund income), and T5008 slips (securities transactions/capital gains). If you have a straightforward investment portfolio with a Canadian brokerage, FastnEasyTax handles it fully.

Q: How do I claim the Ontario Trillium Benefit?

A: The OTB is claimed on the ON-BEN form, which FastnEasyTax includes automatically when you indicate you are an Ontario resident. You’ll need to provide details about your rent or property tax paid, and the software determines your eligibility for each of the three components. OTB payments begin in July of the year following your filing.

Q: I'm self-employed in Ontario. Can I use FastnEasyTax?

A: FastnEasyTax does not support self-employment income (T2125 Business Income forms). If you have self-employment or business income as an Ontario resident, we recommend using TurboTax Self-Employed or consulting a CPA.
